Emergency Closing Procedures

When the college closes, all classes at off-campus sites are canceled. There are several ways to check on the status of an AACC emergency or weather-related closing/delayed opening:

  • AACC’s text messaging system Stay Informed!
Receive updates about AACC via e2campus, a service that sends instant messages to cell phones, wireless PDAs, pagers, and e-mail addresses. Be among the first to know about college closings, event cancellations, traffic advisories, and more. Sign up or log in to manage your account.
  • AACC’s homepage is updated with any emergency announcements.
  • Contact AACC information center for a recorded message:
    Call 410-777-2222
    Select option #2
    Select option #1
  • Radio and television stations in the Baltimore-Washington metro area are notified and many include updates in their broadcasts and/or Web sites.
Important Information
  • The college makes decisions regarding weather-related delayed opening or closing independent of other agencies and Anne Arundel County Public Schools. Because the decision to close the college in the event of snow or hazardous road conditions will be an independent decision, entirely separate and apart from any decision made by the Anne Arundel County Public Schools, please do not assume that if the public schools are closed the college will also be closed.
  • When public schools are closed, all AACC classes held at public school locations are canceled. When Anne Arundel County Public Schools schedule non-emergency closings, AACC classes will meet.
  • The word “college” includes Arundel Mills, Fort Meade Center, Glen Burnie Town Center, HCAT and any other off-campus instructional facility.  Please note that some locations of the college may close while other locations may remain open – all communication will make clear such distinctions.
  • In certain situations, the college may be able to open in time for evening classes. Students enrolled in evening classes should utilize one of the options described above to determine if classes will be held (i.e., stay informed text messaging, AACC Web site).
  • The college makes every effort to arrive at a decision at the earliest possible time. Every effort will be made to notify all radio and television stations by 6:00 a.m. If a separate decision is required for evening classes, every effort will be made to make the decision by 3:00 p.m. If the college opens late, our announcements will identify an opening time, never a delay.
  • If the college opens late, our announcements will always identify a specific opening time, e.g., “Anne Arundel Community College opening at 10:00 AM”. Never will we indicate anything akin to “opening two hours late.” Unfortunately, we have no control over when media outlets choose to report our announcement or the wording they use.
  • Our late opening time has been based on the time it takes to make the campus safe and also accommodate class schedules. As we experience weather events this winter season, we will do our best to consider class schedules when we make our decision. We would also request that when we do open late, please do not arrive on campus prior to one half hour before the scheduled opening time.
  • When we are closed, please do not come on campus. Our Facilities and Public Safety Staff, considered essential personnel, are hard at work trying to make the campus safe to open. Additional cars, traffic and requests to open buildings deter our ability to prepare the college campus for a safe opening.
