Counseling Services and Crisis Intervention

DISTRESSED STUDENTS COUNSELING SERVICES:

Although the college years can be your best years, they can also be very stressful. Occasionally, stressors can become unmanageable and interfere with learning and may lead to frustration, helplessness, anger and/or depression.

If you experience any of these feelings, or have concerns about a fellow classmate or college friend, we encourage you to seek help from Counseling, Advising and Retention Services (CARS). If your instructor has concerns, they may also refer you to seek counseling. This is a true sign of caring and concern, and we encourage you to follow through on their recommendation. Remember, seeking help is a sign of strength.

To help you or to assist you in finding ways to help others, counseling services are available through CARS and are provided by master’s-level trained professionals. If you would like to speak with a counselor, call 410-777-7111. As some issues are best handled in person, the counselor will work with you to schedule an appointment that is convenient for you.

Don’t try to go it alone. Let us help. Your first step is to call 401-777-7111.

Counseling, Advising and Retention Services uses a brief counseling model that has the following characteristics:

  • It is geared toward human development and growth, or life issues that all individuals experience, on occasion.
  • It is time limited.
  • It is focused. Counselors and social workers focus on a specific problem that is interfering with academic progress and success.
  • It is active. The student and the counselor are active participants in the process.
  • It is solution centered. Solutions to the presenting problem, not the cause, are emphasized.
  • It is referral based. A resource list of local mental health agencies and clinicians has been compiled in the Health Services Resource Guide (PDF).
