Environmental Monitoring

Sampling Local Fishes

Over the last two years, we began monitoring the fish community within the marsh. Fishes can serve as bio-indicators of marsh health.

The community composition will reflect the marsh type: freshwater, estuarine or marine. Sampling is done with buoyant pop nets. These nets are set on the marsh bottom. When the triggers are pulled from a distance, the upper part floats to the surface while the lower part stays on the bottom. Thus, all fish within one square meter are caught in the net. Captured fish are then removed with a scoop. We have set these nets throughout the marsh every two weeks during the spring, summer and fall.
