applied foresight... using the perspective

San Diego City College has recently joined the ranks of colleges offering a Certificate in Futures Studies.The program involves employing the methodologies of futures studies while critically thinking about the future to postulate probable and preferable futures. Additionally, SDCC offers both a Certificate and an Associate Degree in Peace Studies. According to the SDCC  website, this program emphasizes "human rights, conflict studies, peace processes and the concept of justice in relation to peace."

Fracking, formally known as hydraulic fracturing, employs chemically treated, pressurized water to break rock formations and release embedded oil and natural gas. This recent National Geographic article considers  present and long term issues with fracking in North Dakota. The website also offers a short animation of the fracking process, and a link describing the problem of natural gas (methane) leaks.

Interested in a course on the future for college credit?

Check our Exploring the Future (FTR /BPA /SOC /PSY 105) course listing. This is a 3 credit-hour General Education course which also satisfies the diversity requirement, and it is offered in either online or face-to-face formats. Registration is open  for the Summer 2013 term, and Fall 2013 registration opens April 17.

Registration is now open for the WorldFuture 2013 Conference, "Exploring the Next Horizon". The conference will be in Chicago, Illinois, USA, July 19 - 21, 2013.
