futures thinking ... looking ahead
Economic indicators as tools to facilitate future planning now include the GPI, the Genuine Progress Index. The GPI is designed to measure sustainable economic well-being. In contrast to the GDP (Gross Domestic Product) which measures only economic activity, the GPI also accounts for environmental degradation, resource depletion, and adverse effects to both human health and quality of life. Several U.S. States and agencies in several countries are implementing the use of the GPI indicator, including Maryland, Vermont, Canada, and others.
