futures thinking ... looking ahead
The Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine (WFIRM) will lead a $24 million project jointly funded by the U.S Navy and the Defense Threat Reduction Agency to develop a “Body on a Chip.” The project includes Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Morgan State University in Maryland, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, and the U.S. Army Edgewood Chemical Biological Center. It is intended to integrate the Organs-on-Chips technology of the Harvard Wyss Institute into a single system. Funded by DARPA and NIH, parallel efforts are underway at 17 other institutions to pursue “tissue chips.” This quick overview includes a display of the Wyss Institute’s current chips, some of the chips in a lab as they are prepared for 3D organ printing, and a description of its Organs-on-Chips technology pipeline. For more, a colleague at IF @ AACC curates an ezine that is currently covering the future of the “augmented human” while highlighting the trends and indicators of these projects and many others.
