Building a Futures Institute - A Blueprint

Background. The Institute for the Future (IF) at Anne Arundel Community College seeks to be a local information and training source for information on the future.  This evolving model seeks to provide learning programs, projects, research, and consulting  to serve the needs of internal and external clients within a specific local region.

A Blueprint, a workbook.  This workbook provides the "Five D's" of starting a local futures institute. The links below will guide you along a path to defining, designing, decoding, doing and delivering your institute.

Your feedback to the author is encouraged and appreciated.  Send comments to Dr. Steve Steele at IF@AACC.edu

Define, Design and Decode...
Define it. How can you get there if you don’t know where you’re going?
On this page you'll find answers to these questions:

"What is the history of the future in your organization?"
"What are some ways that members of your organization may react to your definition?"

Design it. How should we structure and design our institute? On this page you'll find answers to these questions:
"Should we write a plan?"
"How can we plan annually?"

Decode it. Now that you have an idea and a design for your institute, it's time to convert ideas to purpose. On this page you'll find answers to these questions:
"What do you mean by 'decoding?'"
"Can you really 'decode' people? How?"
"What are some emerging roles that you’ll want to consider within your institute?"

Do and Deliver...

Do it. Now change purpose to action.
On this page you'll find answers to these questions:

"How do you convert purpose to action?"
"What are some examples of activities that can be implemented by our institute?"

Deliver it. Finally, you must convey these ideas and actions.
On this page you'll find answers to these questions:

"What's so important about delivery?"
"What are some barriers to delivery?"
