The International Year of Chemistry (IYC 2011) is underway. During this year, activities and events will explore the role of chemistry in promoting sustainability and improved quality of life, support international cooperation, and inspire interest to study chemistry among young people. IYC 2011 is an initiative of the United Nations  Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry.  Many organizations are coordinating activities and learning opportunities. The American Chemical Society is organizing the four quarters of the year to focus in turn on  water in the environment, alternative energy, materials (including nanomaterials), and the chemistry of health.

The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, which met from November 29 to December 10, 2010, adopted decisions which support international cooperation to achieve a low-emission future, but much work remains. The Futureportal will follow this work in the coming months.
