applied foresight... using the perspective
With world-wide demand increasing for diminishing fresh water supplies, global water security has become a major concern. The Global Water Security Intelligence Community Assessment of February 2012 predicts that water problems, such as shortages and poor water quality, will risk political instability, exacerbate regional tensions, and threaten global markets during the next 10 years. The US Water Partnership is a public-private partnership seeking to channel expertise and resources to remediate water supply problems. The World Water Council is an international, French not-for-profit association which promotes the wise management of water resources so that all people have safe water. The World Water Assessment Programme of UNESCO provides water managers and decision-makers with information and data, and has developed a set of World Water Scenarios to 2050.
futures thinking... looking ahead
Thorium-232 may one day serve as a secure nuclear fuel alternative. From mining to waste, Thorium-232 does not produce bomb material, and it is much more abundant in nature than uranium. This site of the World Nuclear Association gives details as well as the estimated world thorium resources. So far, India is the world leader in developing a commercial thorium-232 reactor, but several other countries are actively involved in research and development. Additional information about the future promise of thorium is presented in the Berkeley Energy Review, a publication project of undergraduate students of UC Berkeley whose aim is to develop a resource for collective learning about energy technology.
