What is the Governor's Wellmobile?

History

The Governor's Wellmobile Program was established in 1993 under the leadership of Maryland Delegate Marilyn Goldwater, RN, and the former University of Maryland School of Nursing Dean Barbara Heller.

The commitment to this program continues under the current leadership of Dean Janet Allen. The University of Maryland School of Nursing currently operates four Wellmobiles-33-foot long vans equipped to function as traveling health clinics-that serve the state of Maryland in three regions: Central Maryland, Western Maryland, and along Maryland's Eastern Shore.

Mission

To provide evidence-based primary health care services to uninsured and underserved Maryland residents, using a family nurse practitioner model. Wellmobile nurse practitioners provide vital access to health care for children, families, and individuals who otherwise have little or no way to receive:

  • diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic illnesses
  • preventive services, including screenings for hypertension, diabetes, and cancer
  • assistance in securing medications to treat and manage disease conditions
  • school and sports physicals for children and adolescents
  • migrant health services on the Eastern Shore
  • health fairs and community screenings
  • health education with certified medical interpreters, if needed
  • assistance with locating and securing necessary services including Medicaid, Maryland Children's Health Program, Social Services, Food Stamps, and well baby care, as well as housing and emergency shelters.
