Annapolis and Broadneck Tie for 1st in Math Competition

Jan. 4, 2006

Education

After ceding Severna Park High victory in the first two rounds of the annual county high school mathematics competition, students at Annapolis and Broadneck high schools roared back to share a tie for first place in the third round of competition, held on Dec. 17 at Anne Arundel Community College.

Severna Park retained the top spot in the overall tournament rankings after three rounds, with two rounds to go.

In the first two rounds, Annapolis students came in second place each time, while Broadneck students placed third in the first round, only to be bumped in the second round, scoring near the bottom of the rankings.

The annual high school math competition consists of a series of numerical challenges between public, private and home-schooled high school students. Run by AACC officials, the tournament is made up of five rounds, each consisting of two phases.

First, students work individually to answer six questions within a 30-minute time limit. In the second phase, students team up in groups of no more than five to answer six more questions in 30 minutes or less.

One hundred and ten students participated in the third round of competition and five students -- Chris Fulton and Stephen Guth from Annapolis, Jillian Foley from Broadneck, Matt Lefavor from Old Mill and Pyo Jeon from Severna Park -- answered all six questions correctly in the first phase. Jeon also got all six questions right in the first round of the competition in October. In the team phase of the competition four teams -- two from Broadneck High and one from Annapolis High and North County, each answered all six questions correctly.

Third-round scores were: Annapolis and Broadneck, each 11.0; Severna Park, 9.67; North County, 9.33; Key School, 8.67; Archbishop Spalding and Old Mill, each 8.33; Severn, 7.67; South River, 7.33; Arundel, 7.0; Chesapeake, 6.33; Northeast, 5.33; Meade, 2.0 and Independents 1.33. Scores in each round are computed by adding the team score to the average of the top three scores in the individual phase.

After three rounds of competition, the schools are ranked: Severna Park, 28.33; Annapolis, 27.67; Key School, 23.0; Broadneck, 22.33; Old Mill, 19.67; Archbishop Spalding, 18.0; North County, 17.33; Chesapeake, 17.0; South River, 16.33; Arundel, 15.0; Severn, 13.67; Meade, 12.67; Northeast, 12.66 and Independents, 8.33.

The fourth round of competition is Saturday, Jan. 7, in the Careers Center on the AACC Arnold campus, 101 College Parkway. For information, call Evie Robbins, AACC assistant professor of mathematics, at 410-777-2256.
