Center for Workforce Solutions Welcomes New Exec. Dir.

Feb. 3, 2006

Business/Education

The Center for Workforce Solutions at Anne Arundel Community College is under new leadership with Laura E. Weidner of Severna Park as the new executive director.

She initially worked at the college as an instructor and literacy curriculum coordinator from 1984 to 1991, returning to AACC in June 1998 as director of the English as a second language and basic skills programs. Weidner was promoted in April 2000 to director of integrated reading and English as a second language and again in July 2005 to executive director of community and professional programs. Weidner began her new job Feb. 1.

She has extensive experience in workforce training, including managing the "School at Work" program, a distance learning program for more than 2,500 entry-level hospital workers in 25 states. Under Weidner’s leadership, "School at Work: Building a Career for Healthcare Workers" was recognized for excellence in workforce development by both the National Council for Continuing Education and Training and the National Council of Instructional Administrators. NCIA is an affiliate of the American Association of Community Colleges.

A member of the National Council for Continuing Education and Training, Weidner also has served in leadership roles on the Maryland Association of Adult, Continuing and Community Education as president, vice president and secretary. She also is a certified trainer in Worldwide Instructional Design Systems Software, which aids in performance-based learning curriculum development.

Weidner said her diverse workforce training experience fit well with the goals of the center.

"I enjoy finding ways to meet the unique needs customers (students and employers) might have," Weidner said. "I bring a wide range of leadership experience to my new job and that gives me strengths that blend into what the center is trying to accomplish."

She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in History at Frostburg State University and a Master of Science degree in Reading at Johns Hopkins University.

The AACC Center for Workforce Solutions designs and implements high-quality, affordable employee training programs tailored to the needs of a specific business, industry or government agency. For information, call 410-777-2732.
