Severna Park High School won first place overall in the annual county high school mathematics competition at Anne Arundel Community College, placing almost six points ahead of runner-up Annapolis High School. Broadneck High School finished the year in third place.
The final round of this year’s competition on March 4 drew 108 participants. Key School won first place in the round, Arundel High placed second and two high schools -- Broadneck and Severna Park -- tied for third place. One student -- Nicholas Wu of Arundel High -- got all six questions correct in the competition’s individual phase. Team A from Key School was the only team to achieve a perfect score in the team phase.
Severna Park also took home three of the top five awards presented to students boasting the highest individual scores in the tournament. Stephen Guth of Annapolis High won first place in the Donald Wertz Memorial Book Awards. A repeat champion, Guth tied for first place in last year’s competition. Pyomin Jeon and Edward Nie, both of Severna Park High, placed second and third, respectively. Jeon also was awarded Most Improved Individual by competition judges.
A three-way tie distinguished the fourth place finishers: Nathan Giles of North County High, Jonathan Rau of Northeast High and David Seal of the Key School. Peng Li, the third student from Severna Park High to finish in the top five overall, placed in a three-way tie for fifth place with Jonathan Chapman of Annapolis High and Kasey Jamison of Broadneck High.
The tournament is made up of five rounds, each consisting of two phases. First, students work individually to answer six questions within a 30-minute time limit. In the second phase, students team up in groups of no more than five to answer six questions in 30 minutes or less. School scores are computed by adding the best team score to the average of the top three individuals’ scores.
Final-round scores were: Key School, 8.33; Arundel High, 8.0; Severna Park High and Broadneck High, each 7.0; Annapolis High and North County High, each 6.33; Chesapeake High, 5.67; Severn School, 5.33; Archbishop Spalding and the Independents, each 5.0; Northeast High, 3.33; Old Mill High, 2.0; and South River High, 1.67.
Overall scores were: Severna Park High, 45.33; Annapolis High, 39.34; Broadneck High, 37.67; Key School, 36.66; Archbishop Spalding High, 30.34; North County High, 28.66; Chesapeake High, 28.33; Arundel High, 28.0; Old Mill High, 27.0; Severn School, 23.33; South River High, 21.33; Northeast High and the Independents, 18.66; Meade High, 16.34.
