Become adept at successful cooking strategies involving dishes ranging from creative desserts to extravagant holiday feasts by enrolling in one or more of nine new noncredit continuing education cooking courses offered this fall at Anne Arundel Community College.

All courses are offered at the Hospitality, Culinary Arts and Tourism (HCAT) Institute at the Glen Burnie Town Center and on the Arnold campus. They include basic instruction in food preparation as well as advanced techniques in making soups, crepes and sauces.

Or, ditch the frozen food and Chinese take-out and make ordinary food taste extraordinary in "Beyond the Basics -- Cooking Like a Pro" (GME 394), $41, offered 7-10 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 18.

Expand your cooking repertoire creating thin soups and old-fashioned soups and learn to reincarnate old soup using new ingredients in "The Basics of Soups" (CUI 304), $70, offered noon-5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 22.

Perfect the art of making "Sweet and Savory Crepes" (GME 395), $41, offered 1-4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 5, or become a modern sauce master in "Contemporary Sauces" (CUI 303), $70, offered noon-5 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 24.

Other new courses are: "Cookie Decorating" (CUI 302), $70, offered noon-5 p.m. Saturday or Sunday, Nov. 4 or 5; "Your Holiday Table" (GME 393), $41, offered 7-10 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 4; "Cooking When the Kids Are Gone" (CUI 300), $41, offered 6:30-9:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 25; and "Christmas Dinner Extraordinaire" (GME 397), $41, offered 6:30-9:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 6.

The AACC Arnold campus is at 101 College Parkway. The HCAT Institute is at 7438 Ritchie Highway in Glen Burnie. For information call 410-777-2325, consult a fall noncredit schedule of classes.

Costs listed are for county residents; there is an additional charge of $5 per noncredit course for residents of other counties and a $10 per noncredit course charge for out-of-state residents.
