Prepare for Work in County's Growing Hotel Industry
Mar. 30, 2007
Education
Start training this fall for a new career in the county's booming hotel industry through a new program at Anne Arundel Community College.
The Maryland Higher Education Commission has approved a new certificate program in Hotel/Lodging Management at the college effective this fall. Prepare for entry-level supervisory positions in the industry, boost opportunities for promotion or earn credits that count toward an associate degree.
The hospitality industry is Maryland's largest private employer and several thousand new hotel rooms are in planning or construction stage for areas of the county including Annapolis, Hanover and near the airport. The U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics projects employment in the hospitality and tourism industries will grow 17 percent over the 2004-14 period.
AACC's 24-credit certificate program offers an overview of the field, covers current technology, general management and revenue management functions. The eight courses include an internship and instruction to provide knowledge and experience in facilities ranging from full-service hotels to resorts and extended-stay operations.
Possible occupations for those earning the certificate include assistant front desk manager, front desk supervisor, food and beverage shift supervisor, housekeeping supervisor, sales coordinator, concierge, front desk agent and guest service agent.
Attend an open house for this new program and others offered through the college Hospitality, Culinary Arts and Tourism Institute. The next open house starts at 6 p.m. Thursday, May 17, at the institute, 7438 Ritchie Highway in Glen Burnie. Free parking is available in the adjacent parking garage.
Registration for fall credit classes begins April 24. For information call 410-777-2398 or 1-866-456-HCAT (4228) or e-mail wlmelchor@aacc.edu.
