Two AACC Golfers Qualify in NJCAA National Championship

May 17, 2007

Two Anne Arundel Community College golfers played well enough in the National Junior College Athletic Association regional competition to qualify for the national championship tournament June 4-8, at the Chautauqua Golf Club in New York.

Sophomore Eddie Milligan of Crofton and freshman Riley Owens of Davidsonville, both South River High School graduates, will compete in the individual category. Milligan also qualified last year for the national competition, finishing 37th.

The AACC Golf Team fell just short of qualifying for the team category, placing second to Montgomery College in the regional tournament Monday and Tuesday at Little Bennett Golf Course in Montgomery County. Only the first-place team goes to nationals.

Jim Banello, who is in his second year as coach of the AACC Pioneers, said both young men are excited to be headed to the national competition.

"Eddie saw definite improvement this year. He felt he didn't play as well as he could last year, so he's glad for another opportunity to go up there and show them what he can do," Banello said.

Riley, also a good golfer, started the season slowly and peaked at the end of the season, doing exceptionally well at the regional tournament. According to regional competition rules, the six golfers with the lowest scores move onto nationals. Banello said he almost had three golfers qualify until the third golfer had trouble with the final two holes.

Banello, also the assistant golf pro at South River Golf Club, will accompany the golfers to nationals.
