Annapolis Holds Firm to Lead in 2006-7 Math Competition

           Students at Annapolis High School held firm to their first-place tournament position and won the fourth round of the 2006-07 Anne Arundel County High School Mathematics Competition at Anne Arundel Community College.

            Following in second place overall and for the round was Severna Park High School. Tying for third for the round were Arundel and Broadneck high schools. Broadneck is in third place overall.

            Organized by AACC, the competition is a series of five matches divided into two phases. In the first phase, students work individually to answer as many of six questions as possible during a 30-minute period. In this round, only Huaiyu Wu of Annapolis High answered all six questions correctly.

            In the second phase, students work in teams of up to five members each to answer another set of six questions in 30 minutes. The Annapolis High team achieved a perfect score. School scores are computed by adding the best team score to the average of the top three individuals’ scores.

            Participating in the fourth round on Jan. 6 were 121 students representing teams from 12 county public and private high schools plus a team of independents composed of home-schooled students.

            Fourth-round scores were: Annapolis High, 11.0; Severna Park High, 6.33; Arundel High and Broadneck High, each 5.0; Chesapeake High, 4.67; North County High, 4.33; Old Mill High, 3.67; Archbishop Spalding, 3.33; Severn School, 3.0; Key School, 2.67; Northeast High, South River High and the Independents, each 2.0.

            Overall, the schools are ranked: Annapolis High, 37.67; Severna Park High, 31.0; Broadneck High, 24.33; Arundel High, 22.0; Archbishop Spalding, 21.33; Chesapeake High and South River High, each 19.67; North County High, Old Mill High and Severn School, each 18.67; Key School, 17.33; Northeast High,16.33; the Independents, 14.0.
