View artworks demonstrating the theme “Dislocations” in a national juried show Jan. 25-Feb. 23 at Anne Arundel Community College’s Cade Center for Fine Arts Gallery.
The exhibit showcases work by 23 U.S. artists selected by juror Andrea Pollan, independent curator and director of the Curator’s Office in Washington, D.C. She selected works that explore surprising placements and new contexts in art.
Hear Pollan discuss the exhibit and its theme at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 8 and attend an informal reception with refreshments that same day from 6-8 p.m. Both events are free and take place in the gallery on the Arnold campus, 101 College Parkway.
The photograph “Neither Here Nor There” by Nikki Ruddy of Afton, Minn. at first appears to feature a temporary plywood shelter but proves more complex on closer inspection. A light bulb illuminates the interior, yet there are no other signs of human occupancy in the untrampled snowy landscape that surrounds the structure.
Marcia Wolfson Ray of Baltimore reverses expectations by bringing rural landscape inside with “Wave,” an installation of straw bundles set at angles into the college gallery wall. Sarah Buckius of Ann Arbor, Mich. creates a jolting photo series, “I’m Impressionable,” presenting aphorisms such as “Pretend It’s Fun” and “Pray for Your Sins” that are literally pressed into the flesh of the subject’s forehead.
Tracy Featherstone of Hamilton, Ohio constructed a witty and weird “Snowball Carrier” of stick and wood strips and photographed the bizarre contraption in a kitchen.
Gallery hours are 9 a.m.-4 p.m. weekdays and 6-9 p.m. Wednesdays. For information call 410-777-7028, e-mail cpmona@aacc.edu, or visit www.aacc.edu/cadegallery. Call Disability Support Services, 410-777-2306 or Maryland Relay 711, 72 hours in advance to request special accommodations.
