AACC Trio Win Regional Theater Festival Honors

Jan. 26, 2007

Education/Theater

Anne Arundel Community College students Chelsea Adams of Severna Park, Adam Christy of Arnold and Arthur Sanchez of Annapolis won honors last week in the Region II Festival of the American College Theatre Festival.

Adams, a theater arts major, won first place in the category of Stage Management for her entry based on the AACC Moonlight Troupers drama club’s fall production of “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.” She served as stage manager for the show, which was her fifth with the Moonlight Troupers.

The Severna Park High School graduate is first vice president of the Moonlight Troupers. In fiscal year 2006, she served as assistant stage manager and technical director for the Troupers’ productions of “South Pacific” and “The Emperor’s New Clothes.” Last summer, she served as stage manager for Annapolis Summer Garden Theatre’s production of “Cabaret” and its 40th anniversary celebration.

The Region II competition required a presentation, exhibit and verbal justification. Most competitors were juniors or seniors majoring in stage management.

As the Region II student stage manager nominee, Adams will serve as an alternate to the seven other regional winners vying for selection at the national festival in Washington, D.C., in April. The national winner will assist student playwrights and directors in rehearsing and producing eight 10-minute plays presented in public readings and at one of the national festival performances at the Kennedy Center.

Sanchez and his scene partner Christy, both Broadneck High School graduates, were semifinalists in the Irene Ryan Acting Scholarship acting competition. Sanchez was nominated for his performance in the Troupers’ production of “The Emperor’s New Clothes.” For the competition, he performed a scene from Pinero’s “Short Eyes” and a scene from Oscar Wilde’s “The Importance of Being Earnest.”

The Region II festival took place Jan. 15-19 at the State University of New York-New Paltz in New York. Region II is open to all colleges in the states of Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Washington, D.C., and some schools in West Virginia.
