Jan. 26, 2007

Education/Summer Camps

Kids, ‘tweens and teens can unleash their creativity, explore new interests and discover new talents while having fun this summer at Anne Arundel Community College’s innovative Kids in College summer camps and classes.

Registration begins Monday, Feb. 26, for the 73 camps and course offerings, many of which have separate sessions for specific age groups. Camps run June 18-Aug. 10 in one-week or two-week formats. Most camps are offered as full-day classes from 9 a.m. to 3 or 4 p.m. or as half-day classes. Find out specifics about summer camps and get answers to your general questions at a free open house, 6-7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 28, in the Center for Applied Learning and Technology Room 100 on the Arnold campus.

AACC is offering 38 new camps and classes this summer, including nine in the computer and graphic arts areas. Youth in grades 1-3 can attend new camps in digital photography, digital moviemaking, hands-on robotics and claymation. New offerings for ‘tweens and teens in these areas focus on claymation cinema, multimedia presentations, digital animation and making Web sites.

Adventurous youth can sally forth in two new daylong one-week camps: “An American Girl Adventure (Grades K-5)” (YUH 800) and “Backyard Buccaneers (Grades 1-2)” (YUH 818). Young entrepreneurs can get their start with two new half-day, one-week camps: “Beyond the Lemonade Stand: Love It, Plan It, Do It (Grades 4-6)” (YUH 827) and “Babysitting 101 (Grades 4-7)” (YUH 803).

New science camps extend the pre-med community hospital curriculum to grades 1-3 while offering those in grades 8-10 insight into nursing careers with hands-on activities in the AACC nursing lab. Kindergarteners and the pre-K set can choose from five new half-day specialty camps focusing on sports, spiders, pirates, robots and digital moviemaking.

Other new offerings include a film and TV camp for grades 4-9, a series of world travel and dance camps and high school girls’ soccer or lacrosse fitness camps.

Still on the schedule are popular Kids in College camps in cooking, art, computer repair, chess, healthy living and sports. Among the favorites are “Tech Camp for Girls (Grades 5-7)” (YUH 837) and “Theater Experience: On Stage (Grades 2-5, 5-8 and 7-12)” (YOU 881).
