State Approves AACC Transportation, Log. & Cargo Sec.

Sept. 5, 2008

Residents can train to work in the high-demand transportation and cargo security industry under a new program available this fall at Anne Arundel Community College.

The Maryland Higher Education Commission approved AACC’s Transportation, Logistics and Cargo Security certificate in August.

The TLCS program was developed through a $2.1 million grant from the Employment and Training Administration of the U.S. Department of Labor in response to the area businesses’ demand for qualified workers. The program expects to train at least 150 new workers for entry-level positions in the growing transportation, logistics and cargo security industry as well as upgrade skills of 300 current workers.

Job options vary greatly, with positions in such fields as shipping and freight operations, warehousing and distribution, customer service, supply chain management and planning and expediting clerks.

Applicants are accepted into the program on an ongoing basis. However, deadlines are set to meet college fall and spring semester schedules. Applicants for spring 2009 must apply by Dec. 1. A mandatory orientation will explain program requirements and assess if an applicant qualifies for tuition assistance. All applicants must be at least 18 years old and able to provide documentation of work status and work eligibility. High school seniors who are at least 18 years old and who attend AACC’s Jump Start program for high school students are eligible for up to two TLCS courses.

The introductory course is "Introduction to Transportation and Logistics" (BPA 235). Other courses in the 18-credit-hour certificate include "Introduction to Airport and Seaport Operations" (BPA 236), "Transportation and Border Security" (HLS 213), "Supply Chain Management" (BPA 237), "Domestic and International Freight Operations" (BPA 238) and "Practicum in Business 1" (BPA 275), a work experience in the field.

AACC also offers continuing education courses: "Customer Service," "Principles of Supervision" and "Cargo Warehouse Workplace Safety" are offered this fall. Next spring, two more will be added, "Imports and Exports" and "Homeland Security Issues." Interested students should contact the Transportation, Logistics and Cargo office, 410-777-2110, to get a schedule. As with the credit courses, applicants for the noncredit courses must be at least 18 years old and able to provide documentation of work status and work eligibility.

For information on the program or to sign up for an orientation, call 410-777-2110.
