Broadneck, Chesapeake Tie for Math Competition Lead

      Students from Broadneck and Chesapeake high schools tied for first place in the Feb. 21 round of the 2008-09 Anne Arundel County High School Mathematics Competition hosted by Anne Arundel Community College.

      Coming in third was Seven School. This fourth round of the competition attracted 110 students from 14 public and private county high schools.

      Other scores in this round were Archbishop Spalding High and Meade High, tied at 9.0; Key School, 8.67; Annapolis High, 8.33; Indian Creek, 6.33; Arundel High, Severna Park High and South River High, tied at 6.0; North County High, 5.33; Old Mill High, 2.67; and Northeast High, 1.0. The Arundel Home team did not participate in this round.

      Organized by AACC, the competition is a series of five matches with each competition divided into two phases. In the first phase, students work individually to answer as many of six questions as possible during the 30-minute time limit. 

     Fourteen students who achieved perfect scores: Casey O’Brien from Annapolis High; Sammy Larson from Archbishop Spalding High; Kyle Fairchild, Tyler Stocksdale and Kerry Toole from Chesapeake High; Eric Baukhages from Indian Creek School; Beccie Magnus and Max Schulman from Key School; Logan Crew from Meade High, Lisa Giles from North County High; Allie Scrimgeour from Old Mill High; Will Lagarde and Constantine Nakos from Severn School and Dianna Bartone from South River High.

      In the second phase of the competition, the students work in teams of up to five members each to answer another set of six questions in 30 minutes. Broadneck High School’s team achieved a perfect score on this part of the competition.

      School scores are computed by adding the best team score to the average of the top three individuals’ scores.

      Scores to date have Annapolis High in the lead at 41.33 points followed by Chesapeake High, 39.67; Broadneck High, 38.67; Key School, 36.67; Severn School, 34.67; Archbishop Spalding High, 32.0; Meade High, 30.67; Arundel High, 30.33; Severna Park High, 28.67; South River High, 27.0; Indian Creek, 25.67; North County High, 16.33; Old Mill High and the Arundel Home team, tied at 9.33 and Northeast High 3.67.
