The National Security Agency and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security have designated Anne Arundel Community College as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance Two-Year Education (CAE2YR) for academic years 2010-2015.
AACC is one of three community colleges in Maryland, one of seven colleges and universities in the state and one of six two-year colleges in the nation with the designation, which is awarded in five-year intervals to those meeting stringent criteria. Nationwide, 106 two- and four-year colleges and universities now carry this designation.
In announcing the selection, the two groups cited AACC’s ability to meet the strict selection criteria and its contribution, through its exceptional cybersecurity workforce training, to helping protect America’s information infrastructure. The designation is only open to colleges and universities with courses and programs certified as meeting Committee on National Security Systems (CNSS) Training Standards. They also must score high on criteria governing outreach, faculty expertise, information assurance resources and more.
AACC is the nation’s first community college to win federal certification of its information security and cybercrime curricula. The college offers an Associate of Applied Science degree program and a certificate program in Information and Cyber Security. It created a 2+2+2 academic pathway from high school to community college to four-year university. AACC’s core program includes courses that fully map to National Security Telecommunications and System Security Instruction 4011 and 4103 standards and that prepare students to sit for several industry certifications, including the Cisco Certified Network Associate, Network+, Security+, SCNS (Security Certified Network Specialist), SCNP (Security Certified Network Professional), Certified Computer Examiner (CCE) and CISSP (Certified Information Systems Security Professional).
