Three Anne Arundel Community College students have won national honors for a one-act play, poem and an artwork entered in the League for Innovation in the Community College’s 2010-2011 Student Literary Competition and Student Art Competition.
Taking second place in the literary competition was Vincent Turpin of Gambrills for his one-act play titled “Whispers in the Dark.” Honorable mention went to Benjamin L. Staisloff of Severna Park for his poem “My God Has Blistered Feet.” The competition drew more than 60 literary works from the 19 League board colleges.
Taking third place in the League’s 24th annual student art competition was Barrie Barnett of Annapolis for her compelling, exquisitely painted portrait of her mother entitled “Bonfire of the Vanities.” Barnett’s statement about her work noted that her mother lives in a home where dressing up for meals remains the norm even though some members “can barely feed themselves.” She describes her painting as “rebellious” for the unflattering portrayal of her mother and the title she gave the artwork.
The student art competition drew 95 entries from students at the League’s 19 board colleges. AACC was selected to join the League Board of Directors in October 2004.
