Race to win a turkey or a pie for Thanksgiving at the Anne Arundel Community College 23rd Annual 5K Turkey Trot and One-Mile Jaunt and Food Drive on Wednesday, Nov. 23, on the Arnold campus.
Both the race and the walk begin at noon at Siegert Field. First place 5K finishers can win a free turkey for achieving the fastest time in the race or for accurately predicting how fast they will run the race. 5K runners-up earn a selection of holiday pies, gift cards and more. The One-Mile Jaunt is a noncompetitive, family-friendly event.
Both events begin and end on the Siegert Field track followed by a 1:15 p.m. awards ceremony in the David S. Jenkins Gymnasium. The 5K run follows a moderately hilly, well-marked paved course. This year, entries are for individuals with a choice of category: fastest time or closest predicted time. Runners under age 15 can compete in the fastest time category only.
The registration fee for the 5K race is $15 through Nov. 9 and $20 after that date. The One-Mile Jaunt early-entry fee is $10 with a fee of $15 after Nov. 9. Race proceeds benefit the fitness center in the gymnasium.
Turkey trotters and their supporters are encouraged to bring canned goods and nonperishable items to the event for donation to the AACC Food Pantry, which is located in the Student Life office. Suggested items to donate are microwavable dinners, soups and snacks, cups of fruit, breakfast bars, granola bars and cereal. Since March 2010, the pantry was accessed 500 times by students.
Event co-sponsors are the AACC School of Health Professions, Wellness and Physical Education and the college Health, Fitness and Exercise Studies program. For Turkey Trot information, call 410-777-2302. To register, for rules and a race course map, visit the Turkey Trot Web site.
