The FIRST® LEGO® League “Battle by the Bay” tournament on Jan. 21 at Anne Arundel Community College attracted 16 teams in a test of skills involving construction of and programming a LEGO® MINDSTORM® robot to perform tasks along a preset course.
Five teams from the AACC tournament on Jan. 28 will vie for statewide honors at the Maryland tournament at the University of Maryland Baltimore County in Catonsville. Competitors included organizations, school groups and scout groups. Teams were judged in the three areas of robot design, Core Values and project, which was based on the theme of Food Factor and involved aspects of food production and food safety.
Advancing teams are: Brickstorm from Boyds, Md.; Pineapple Punch from Annapolis Area Christian School, Annapolis; Smarties from the Bywater Boys and Girls Club of Annapolis & Anne Arundel County of Annapolis; Team Infinity from the Patriots Technology Training Center, Clinton; and The LEGOBOTS from Grace Christian School, Bowie.
The FIRST® LEGO® League is a world-wide robotics program for students ages 9-16. Leading the planning team for Anne Arundel Community College, which hosted the tournament, were Marjorie A. Rawhouser, Ph.D., assistant professor of engineering, and Beth Wyler, assistant professor of engineering. More than 100 volunteers from the college and community assisted in the event.
