Responsibility and Accountability: It is Up to You!
  • Positive mental attitude: Think in terms of “I want, I can, and I will!”
  • Stress management: Manage stress with techniques such as controlled breathing, muscle relaxation, and imagery.
  • Exercise and healthful diet: Eat well, especially prior to an exam.
Goal Setting and Time Management: Get it Together!

S.M.A.R.T. goal setting for developing and implementing study skills:
Specific: Who, what, where, why, and how
Measurable: How will I know if/when goal is accomplished?
Achievable: Doable goals that are attainable yet stretch you
Relevant: Short-term goals lead us to achieve long-term goals
Timely: Set realistic timeframes that are achievable (for example: "I will effectively study for my exam by preparing for lecture by reading my text, taking notes, studying each day, and using SMARTHINKING and/or ATI as learning tools.")

TIME MANAGEMENT:

  • Get organized: Create a master schedule with fixed and flexible activities and determine how to use your flexible time. Consider using your PDA for scheduling.
  • Develop self-discipline: Keep an activities journal listing what you do with your time for one week. Are you maximizing your time?
  • Learn to say no to requests on your time that you are unable to fulfill.
  • Use your time wisely: Be careful with your time on phone calls, texting, and television.

Critical Thinking: Learn and Practice, Practice and Learn!
  • Thinking aloud: Actively participate in lecture, classroom discussion, clinical pre- and post-conference, and laboratory scenarios.
  • Written assignments are important: Concept mapping, journaling, and care plans require critical thinking so put time into doing them well. Use these tools to study also; concept maps are great study tools!
  • Examinations: Learning opportunities that require you to integrate information, apply theory, analyze content, compare and contrast information, and give your response.
