FAQs about New Student Orientation

"Did you know that students learn and grow primarily as a direct result of what they do rather than what others do? Consequently, active participation in and identification with all aspects of campus life will enhance student learning..." - John Gardner

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to attend orientation?
Orientation is mandatory for all new students.

Why is orientation important to adult students who may have taken college courses at other institutions?
While many post-secondary institutions are similar in many ways, each institution has different policies, procedures and services. During orientation, you will learn about activities and services designed for adult students. Adult students are urged to access the online orientation if they find it impossible to attend a campus orientation session.

What are the dates of orientation?
Orientation sessions are offered each January and each summer, in June, July and August.

How long is orientation?
Expect to spend 2 1/2 hours at the orientation session. The adult orientation is an hour-and-a- half. You will be asked to complete a survey and evaluation after your orientation. Once you have submitted these items, you have completed orientation.

Do I need to sign up or will I receive an invitation?
If you registered for classes in your high school, you are able to select a June orientation date at the time of your registration. If you are admitted and register for classes after mid-June, you will receive an invitation in the mail. We also contact students by email and telephone to remind them about orientation. Your invitation will include the date, time and location of upcoming sessions. Students are encouraged to attend an orientation session based on your specific needs. For example, sessions are offered for students enrolled in academic programs (majors) designed to transfer to a four-year institution or for career and technical programs of study. Other factors that should guide your selection of an orientation session include the type of information you need. Sessions are offered for traditional-age populations and for adult populations. Admission to the Jump Start program and location of your classes also may influence your selection of an orientation session. We encourage all students to reserve a seat at orientation by signing up for a session. Sign-up for a session or change your session here.

What if I have a schedule conflict?
Contact the Office of the Assistant Dean for Student Development and Success at 410-777-2888 or change your session. We discourage traditional-age students from attending an adult student orientation. The content differs from that presented to recent high school graduates, home schooled and Jump Start students.

What kind of information will I receive at Orientation?
You will receive information about college services and resources and you will learn how to access MyAACC. Information that will assist you during your first advising appointment, as well as information helpful to you during your first semester, will be presented. Finally, you will learn tips for navigating college systems, achieving academic success and how to handle situations that could hinder goal achievement.

Where can I find out more about the college?
Explore the college Web site. If you have specific questions about the college and do not find an answer online, call the Campus Information Center at 410 777-1999 or 410 777-2222. If you have specific questions about orientation, contact us at 410-777-2888.
