Learning through experience. Meeting community needs.
The Sarbanes Center provides leadership and support to engaged learning activities for the college and the community it serves. Engaged Learning is the active, hands-on application of classroom theories and concepts in real world situations. Also referred to as experiential learning or applied learning, engaged learning provides opportunities for students to interact with the community in mutually beneficial activities that expand the students' awareness of issues and understanding of course content.
Engaged learning involves collaboration on activities and programs, including:
Students - Gain hands-on learning experience in the community to enhance classroom learning while also providing valuable resources to meet community needs.
Faculty - Enhance curriculum by providing opportunities for students to engage in real-world experiences to meet course learning objectives and college-wide competencies.
Community Partners - Gain valuable resources from student participation to meet community needs while also providing valuable learning opportunities for students.
The Sarbanes Center for Public and Community Service is comprised of the following:
Center for Learning through Service - The center promotes civic engagement and learning by providing opportunities for students, faculty and staff to serve their community through academically based service-learning assignments and general community service projects. For students, service learning is a strategy to help connect class learning objectives to community service projects and faculty-guided reflection.
Center for the Study of Local Issues - The center serves as the principal means for students to use applied research techniques in the study of issues that affect Anne Arundel County.
Institute for the Future @ AACC - The Institute promotes a more humane tomorrow by encouraging dialogue about the future today. Using national and international resources, IF@AACC debates and applies futuristic visions to our community's problems.
Internship Office - Students learn by combining academic studies with paid and non-paid, part- or full-time, on-the-job work experiences related to the student’s major. Engaged learning experiences assist students to connect classroom theory to real-world employment practices.
Office of Travel Study and Global Engagement- The office offers short-term travel opportunities for students to domestic and international locations to enhance their educational experience.
