Page 2  Question: “What is astrosociology and why is it important to the future of space exploration?”

by Jim Pass, PhD, Astrosociology and Space Exploration

Jim Pass

Perhaps the greatest promise of astrosociology lies in its proposed multidisciplinary approach.  While it is anchored in sociology, with contributions from the other social sciences, humanities and elements of the space community, astrosociology can function as an organizing banner for the development of a comprehensive study of space and society on a broad scale.  The multidisciplinary character of this new sociological subdiscipline can serve as a lightning rod so that an organized astrosociological literature develops, with the space-related parts of sociology and the social sciences becoming integrated in the process.

Here's a professional snapshot of  Dr.  Jim Pass....

Dr. Pass received his Ph.D. at the University of Southern California in 1991.  Although specializing in deviance and political economy upon graduation, his interest in space exploration was always present since the Moon landing in 1969.  Upon seeing the term astrosociology in an article by Dr. Allen Tough at the benefits of SETI, he immediately purchased the domain Astrosociology.com and set to work on developing a new subdiscipline combining his interests in space and sociology.  Today, astrosociology is slowly developing into an accepted subfield as exemplified by (1) Dr. Pass making several presentations at conferences and (2) the growing number of supporters from sociology, the other social sciences, the humanities, and the space sciences.
