Learning Technologies and the Virtual Campus

Telecommunications technologies have eliminated the boundaries that have traditionally designated the service area of a community college. Online instruction and interactive courses provide unlimited access to higher education. Courses are now available anytime and anywhere through technology.

AACC has experienced phenomenal growth in distance education.

  • In 1996, the first online course had 26 enrollments.
  • Today, there are over 6,500 enrollments in AACC online courses.
  • Almost one-fifth (19 percent) of our credit students take at least one distance learning class.
  • AACC has the largest community college Virtual Campus - distance learning program  in Maryland

The Online Academy was developed to train faculty to develop new online courses. It also provides them with the support for using technology in instruction. The college uses ANGEL as its learning management system for online courses. It is a goal of the institution to develop at least 5 new online courses each year. At the same time that distance learning is expanding, it is vitally important to make sure that course quality is consistent and that online students have access to the same student resources that campus-based students enjoy.

AACC plans to use appropriate technologies to provide advising, career counseling and job placement services regardless of location or time of day.  In many distance-learning courses, alternative assessment methods have been developed so that you don’t have to come to the campus to take an exam. Library resources are available online and even academic advising along with registration are possible with a Web-based system called WebAdvisor, to provide these services to all our students.
