Academic Support - Placement Testing
The placement test at AACC is used to assess college level skills in the areas of mathematics, English and reading. The computerized placement test (ACCUPLACER) is offered to new students to assist AACC staff in determining course placement. This is not a college admissions test. After the test has been completed and scored, an adviser will review the results with the student and offer suggestions for appropriate courses.

There are three types of placement tests described below:
- The Accuplacer Placement (Native English Speakers)
- ESL Placement (Non-Native English Speakers )
- Arithmetic Placement test (Health Professions and Biology Students ONLY).

Accuplacer test for native English Speakers
The Accuplacer test consists of three sections, Reading, English, and Math. The exam has no time limit and takes approximately two and one-half hours to complete. Computer experience is not necessary to take this test. Test results will be available shortly after you finish the test.
Students may use ACT or SAT scores instead of college placement scores. Placement testing scores can be transferred within the community college system of Maryland.
Placement tests for AACC's students are FREE!
Accuplacer test for non-native English Speakers
The English as a Second language exam is administered on the computer, but requires no computer skills. The test is not timed but generally takes about 3 hours. Students may need to complete an essay after finishing the computerized part of the placement test.
Arithmetic Placement Test
The Arithmetic Placement test is designed to determine whether a student has sufficient arithmetic skills to qualify for Nursing (RN and LPN programs) and EMT-Paramedic Program. Every student applying for either of these programs must take this particular placement test.
REMINDER: No calculator is allowed for the arithmetic placement! Some students may need to take the Arithmetic Placement test to obtain eligibility for several Biology courses.
