Academic Support - Placement Testing

The placement test at AACC is used to assess college level skills in the areas of mathematics, English and reading. The computerized placement test (Accuplacer) is offered to new students to assist AACC staff in determining course placement. This is not a college admissions test. After the test has been completed and scored, an adviser will review the results with the student and offer suggestions for appropriate courses.

There are three types of placement tests described below:

  • the Accuplacer Placement (all students required)
  • ESL Placement (ESL ONLY)
  • the Health Professions Arithmetic Placement test (Health Professions ONLY).

All new students must then attend a scheduled orientation. Students needing special testing accommodations should contact Disability Support Services (DSS) at 410-777-2307. Some links on this page require Adobe Reader, Get Adobe Reader Free!

Who needs to take a placement test? If you are a new student pursuing a degree and have not completed courses at other colleges in the areas of mathematics, English, or reading, then you are required to take the placement test. Non-degree seeking students who want to take courses that require specific placement scores must take the placement test. You can use ACT or SAT scores instead of college placement scores. Placement testing scores can be transferred within the community college system of Maryland. Placement test for AACC's students is FREE!

Does AACC have other school placement testing? Yes, Other School Placement Testing (OST Placement) is also proctored by the AACC Testing Office. This is for students from other institutions who wish to have their test proctored by AACC's Testing Office. The fee is $15.

Can I see a sample of the placement test? You can get a sample paper copy of a placement test at any Testing Office location. Print and view an online sample of our placement test (PDF).

How is a placement test administered? Our computerized placement test has no time limit. The test is administered in the Testing Office and takes approximately two and one-half hours. Computer experience is not necessary to take this test. Test results will be available shortly after you finish the test.

When can I take a placement test? Any time we are open, but please leave enough time to test. Please see our Testing Office hours (PDF) schedule.

How long will it take for a placement test? For the math, English and reading we suggest it will take about 45 minutes per test, but there is no time limit. For Health Professions Placement, there is a 30 minute time limit.
