AACC to Honor Indigenous Peoples' Day

Join us for an assortment of events honoring Indigenous People. Refreshments and snacks will be available in CALT 100 throughout the day.

Hands-on Workshop: Exploring Woodland Indian Heritage

Katherine Gill (program manager at Chesapeake Crossroads Heritage Area) and Andrew Webster (preservation stewardship program manager with Anne Arundel County’s Cultural Resources Section) will share insights into the lives and traditions of Indigenous peoples in our area. Create a paper replica of a Woodland Indian lodge house. This event is a collaboration between Art History and Anthropology, with support and funding from the Office of Student Engagement.

Artist Tom Farris (Cherokee and Otoe-Missouria) in Conversation with Todd Richardson, Ph.D.

Artist Farris will join Richardson, James R. Schumacher Chair of Ethics at the University of Nebraska, Omaha, in a discussion of Farris' work as a reflection of the modern perspective on the Native experience operating within a dominant culture. Farris' exhibition, "Tom Farris: alterNative," is on view in the Cade Gallery through Oct. 22. This event is co-sponsored by the Cade Gallery and the IDEAL Office.

Conversation with Visual Artists Kristin Gentry (Choctaw Nation) and Kindra Swafford (Cherokee)
Moderated by Tom Farris

Gentry and Swafford, both of whom identify as Two Spirit, will discuss their work and backgrounds. This event is co-sponsored by the Cade Gallery and the IDEAL Office.

Lecture on Indigenous Foodways by Drew Shuptar-Rayvis (Pocomoke Indian Nation)

Shuptar-Rayvis, of the Pocomoke Indian Nation, a living historian, will present a lecture on Maryland's Indigenous foodways. This event is sponsored by the Office of Student Engagement.

The Center for Liberal Arts Work  will host a seminar with Brandy Whitlock on the poetry of Joy Harjo (Muscogee). More details and location coming soon!
