Anne Arundel Community College named Marjorie Rawhouser, Ph.D., as its new assistant dean for the School of Liberal Arts, effective Jan. 2. Rawhouser moved into the newly created position from her previous post as associate professor of engineering and lead liaison for AACC’s University Consortium with Frostburg State University.
This position was created to support AACC’s strategic plan, “Engagement Matters,” by furthering its commitment to create meaningful academic experiences to help students reach their career destinations. In this new role, Rawhouser will support the college’s Fields of Interest and Explore initiatives. These programs will provide a nurturing environment designed to help undecided students choose their major.
In her eighth year at AACC, Rawhouser says she’s excited about this leadership role. “I really enjoy the opportunity to have an effect on more students beyond the classroom. This position gives me the chance to do that, but also will still have an element of contact with students and will allow me to work closely with faculty, advisors and others who are directly supporting students,” she said.
“Prior to creating this position, there was no administrator to steer students in the right direction,” said Michael Gavin, vice president for Learning. “Rawhouser will provide structure to the Fields of Interest, our new initiative, and make sure students are on the right path to completing their degree and transferring to a four-year institution. This is a transformational event happening for the college because it aligns with our strategic plan. We’re confident we have the right person for the job.”
In 2017, Rawhouser received the “Outstanding Engineering Alumna” award from Pennsylvania State University for her academic and career success as an engineer. Rawhouser graduated from the United States Naval Academy with a bachelor’s degree in systems engineering, and received a master’s and doctorate in bioengineering from Pennsylvania State University.
