Section Info: Online | Music Masterpiece: Romantic Russians. | This course explores the development of Russian music from its early lack of a national tradition to its emergence as a distinctive cultural force. Students will study the rise of native composition with Mikhail Glinka, the nationalist movement of the "Mighty Fistful," and the blending of folk elements with Romanticism. The course concludes with an examination of major Soviet-era influences and composers, including Shostakovich and emigre figures such as Rachmaninov and Stravinsky. | Note: Attendance in online class sessions on Thursdays from 1:00-3:00 p.m. is mandatory for section 202.
