Students will study the rise of native composition with Mikhail Glinka, the nationalist movement of the "Mighty Fistful," and the blending of folk elements with Romanticism. The course concludes with an examination of major Soviet-era influences and composers, including Shostakovich and emigre figures such as Rachmaninov and Stravinsky. | Note: Attendance in online class sessions Tuesdays from 9:00-11:00 a.m. is mandatory for section 201.

The music of Iceland will also be included. Their works include concertos, orchestral music, and operas.
