It began with film adaptations of "hardboiled" crime thrillers that were written from the 1920s onward by novelists like Dashiell Hammett, Raymond Chandler, and James M. Cain. Tough-as-nails detectives probe the murky depths of the human soul, reckoning with villains - some of them "black widow" female killers - who teach us to "watch our backs" as we make our way through a world that can be sinister beyond belief.
