Section Info: Arnold Senior Center | Wood Carving-Beginner Novice | This wood carving class is designed for absolute beginners, including those with no experience or who have not carved in many years. Instruction focuses on hand tools only-knives and gouges-with no power tools used. Students learn tool selection, basic knife cuts, sharpening, wood selection, pattern application, pyrography, and painting. Because tools are extremely sharp, safety and basic first aid is emphasized. A Kevlar carving glove and leather thumb guard are required. Students will discover pastels as an exciting alternative to traditional painting methods. Individual attention is provided, and topics like framing, exhibiting, and shipping pastels will be covered. Demos and critiques guide you through personal or instructor provided subjects and invite bold experiments in pen, ink, collage, and mixed media.
