A Little More

Owen Silverman Andrews has taught English to immigrants at Maryland community colleges and community-based organizations since 2013. He joined the English Language Learning program at AACC in 2018. For Andrews, that means he gets to be a part of “students strengthening the communicative skills needed to amplify their own multilingual voices.”

He is passionate about his work, especially when it comes to helping his students. In fact, he’s co-editor of a forthcoming book about how teachers can better listen to their students. He believes language learning and multilingualism are powerful tools for building a more just society, and he has written commentary for numerous media outlets, including The Washington Post, the Forward, the Afro, Baltimore Sun and Capital Gazette.

At AACC, Andrews serves on the Institutional Assessment Team and is advisor to the Muslim Student Association. He is inspired by AACC students as “whole people immersed in the life of Anne Arundel County and Maryland, whether it is their community of birth or choice.”

Outside of AACC, Andrews is an avid advocate, cat dad, community organizer, cyclist, gardener, hiker, reader, traveler and writer. He enjoys spending time with friends and family, including his wife Mairin whom he met while co-leading a delegation of Maryland high school and university students in El Salvador in 2012.
