Not everyone considers doing taxes fun. But for volunteers with Anne Arundel Community College’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, solving even the trickiest tax questions is part of the appeal.
“It's fun to learn how to solve problems, especially tax problems,” said Mike Stolarczyk, a longtime volunteer.
Stolarczyk has volunteered as a tax preparer for seven years. He began as a student and continues to return each year, even after graduating.
"I love working with the professors. I've had them as teachers, instructors and working with VITA, so I love the comradery,” he said. “I love learning about the clients and learning about their different situations too.”
Through VITA, IRS-certified volunteers provide free, basic income tax return preparation with electronic filing to qualified individuals making $69,000 or less in tax year 2025.
Student volunteer Jazmin Morales encourages community members not to feel intimidated about seeking help.
“We’re always here to help,” Morales said.
Now in her second year, Morales often serves as the program’s Spanish-speaking resource, helping clients feel comfortable when discussing their financial information. She said their gratitude makes the experience especially meaningful and has helped her gain confidence in communicating in a professional setting.
VITA is offered in person by appointment only on Wednesdays and Saturdays from Feb. 4 through April 4, excluding the college’s spring break.
To schedule an appointment or for details, visit the VITA webpage, call 410-777-2051 or email vita@aacc.edu.
