A Little More

Susan Ficken is passionate about sharing knowledge, and not just in math. At Anne Arundel Community College, she brings that curiosity into the classroom, where she works closely with students in smaller, more interactive settings that encourage participation and connection.

Ficken’s love of learning extends far beyond numbers. She has a deep interest in languages, not only for communication but for the cultural exchange they make possible.

"It is not just the ability to speak another language, but also the ability to exchange knowledge and cultural understanding with people from various parts of the world who don't necessarily speak English," she said.

Her passion has taken her beyond the classroom, giving her the opportunity to travel, experience new cultures and even meet some of the people she first connected with online.

That same sense of discipline and openness shows up in another long-standing interest: Aikido. Ficken has practiced the Japanese martial art for many years, an experience that reflects her commitment to growth, focus and lifelong learning.

At AACC, she values being part of a community that shares her student-centered approach. She is also involved in seminar-style instruction through the Center for Liberal Arts Work (CLAW), helping create classroom experiences that are thoughtful, engaging and collaborative.

What inspires her most about AACC students?

“Students who persevere through life’s obstacles,” she said. “Students who continue learning even when life has thrown up barriers.”
