AACC offers Maryland-approved security guard training for individuals seeking initial certification or renewing their credentials. Designed to meet Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commissions requirements, our courses help participants remain current, strengthen their professional readiness and stay aligned with evolving standards for licensed security personnel in Maryland.


Courses

SPP-525 Security Guard Certification Training

This program is your gateway to a rewarding, in-demand career in security. Approved by the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission (MPCTC), it fully prepares you to meet Maryland’s standards for a certified security guard and step into employment with confidence.

In this course, you will:

  • Learn the requirements to obtain and maintain your security guard certification in Maryland.
  • Understand the legal boundaries of the role and what a security guard is authorized to do (and not do) under state law.
  • Develop the ability to recognize criminal behavior, apply Maryland criminal codes and understand arrest/detention authority.
  • Explore the definitions and limitations around use of force, de-escalation techniques and how to intervene responsibly when conflict arises.
  • Develop effective communication strategies, methods for interacting with vulnerable populations (juveniles, individuals in crisis, those with disabilities, persons with behavioral health needs) and techniques to respond safely when aid is needed.

Outcomes: Upon successful completion, you will receive a certificate that meets the MPCTC’s entrance-level training objectives and will be prepared to pursue employment in security roles across corporate, campus, event, healthcare, transportation and government settings. Refer to the Maryland State Police website for the required qualifications to receive a Security Guard Certification.

SPP-526 Security Guard Certification Renewal Training

Already certified as a security guard? This targeted renewal course ensures your credentials remain current, sharpens professional readiness and keeps you aligned with evolving state standards for licensed security personnel in Maryland.

In this program you will:

  • Refresh your understanding of the certification renewal process, including how to maintain and update your credentials under Maryland regulations.
  • Revisit critical legal topics, such as reviewing authority and limitations as a security guard, reinforcing reporting requirements and ensuring clarity around use of force and legal ramifications.
  • Enhance your skills around de-escalation, time/distance/cover techniques and using effective communication in high-pressure situations.
  • Strengthen the ability to engage professionally with a variety of populations in the field from individuals with behavioral health issues to minors or persons with disabilities. Learn protocols for offering or seeking aid when needed.

Outcomes: Completion of this renewal training means you are up to date with MPCTC requirements, maintaining your license eligibility and staying competitive for continuing work in the security industry. Refer to the Maryland State Police website for the required qualifications to receive a Security Guard Certification.


Credentials

Successful completion of this course satisfies the Maryland Police Training and Correctional Training Commissions required 12 hours of initial security training.


Cost

The Security Guard Training program costs $124 for an Anne Arundel County resident includes $18 fee.

The Security Guard Renewal Training program costs $89 for an Anne Arundel County resident includes $18 fee.

How to Register

Students taking noncredit classes don't need to apply for admission to AACC. Just check out our course search, choose a program or course that interests you, register and make your payment. Registration for summer and fall courses is open! Please check course availability prior to registration.
