A Little More

Juli Hawk’s path back to Anne Arundel Community College was a winding one guided by her core values of adventure, community and learning. She started at the college as a part-time faculty member in 2019 and bounced her way through a few other professor jobs before returning home to AACC in 2025.

Hawk’s professional journey is driven by a passion for mental health education, crisis intervention and community support. Before teaching, she volunteered as an education chair for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention Maryland, an advisor for Active Minds, a mentor for Sources of Strength and a counselor for Crisis Text Line. She also worked with 16- to 25-year-olds (her favorite population) with severe mental health disorders as a residential manager, community case manager and, finally, an outreach and education specialist. Hawk has also had some fun stints as a Panera Bread trainer, Medieval Times photo wench, dog-boarding room attendant, microfiche work-study student and babysitter.

At AACC, Hawk is part of the Center for Liberal Arts Work (CLAW) initiative and loves hearing colleagues’ thoughts on all things, but especially on learning in the classroom. She serves as one of the head librarians for AACC's Human Library, something she hopes to establish as a permanent, recurring event following the successful fall 2026 inaugural event. She hosts psychology movie nights and hopes to find a role as a student club advisor.

Students describe Hawk as passionate, supportive and fun. Just make sure your references are properly cited.

“I am self-disclosing that I am known as strict with APA citations and references,” she said. “I once was informed, ‘You’re giving Ms. Frizzle,’ which is perhaps the best compliment.”

Outside of the world of psychology, Hawk’s life is a good mix of family, creativity, chaos and community. Alongside her two kids, husband and an assortment of animals, she aims to make her family’s values shine through.

“We love to host events/hangouts/themed movie nights/pajama mornings, et cetera. Don’t need to ask me twice to throw an event together!” she said. “I am somewhat known for having the things you might need. Sure, I have 12 tongs that are shaped like hands. Why, don’t you?”

An avid reader, Hawk reads more than 100 books a year with a normal flavoring of fantasy and sci-fi, although she does pick up some psychology books here and there. She also loves wearing large, colorful earrings. Take a class with her, and you’ll get a sense of her fashion taste!
