Prepare to “Unjudge” Someone

Text that says,

Everyone has a story. The Human Library gives you the chance to hear those stories firsthand.

Join us for an evening of conversation, connection and celebration of the experiences that make us who we are. At the Human Library, people become “Books,” sharing their personal stories and lived experiences with “Readers” through open, respectful conversation.

Come ready to listen, ask questions, and discover a new perspective.

Oct. 15, 2026
4-8 p.m.
Student Union Room 100 (Hawk’s Nest Grill and Deli)

The event will also feature tables from AACC and community organizations where you can learn about available programs, services and resources.

What is a Human Library?

Instead of checking out a book to read, the Human Library invites you to have a conversation with a real person.

Human “Books” are volunteers who share their experiences and answer questions from “Readers.” Each Book offers a chance to learn directly from someone whose life, identity or experiences may be different from your own.

The Human Library began in Denmark in 2000 and has since brought people together in more than 85 countries. Its goal is simple: create a safe space for conversations that can challenge stereotypes, reduce stigma and help people better understand one another.

Come With an Open Mind

You don't need to know the right questions to ask, and you don't need to be an expert on someone else's experience. You just need to be willing to listen.

The Human Library is an opportunity to move beyond assumptions and learn about another person's experiences directly from them.

Stop by, meet a Human Book and prepare to “unjudge” someone.

Make the Most of Your Human Library Experience

The Human Library is an opportunity to listen, ask questions and learn from the lived experiences of others. You are encouraged to participate with curiosity and an open mind. Students may also be able to connect their experience to their coursework.

Students: Talk with your instructors before the event to find out if your participation may qualify for extra credit or another class-related opportunity.

AACC employees: Employees may receive Individual Professional Development (IPD) credit for attending the Human Library. Participation fulfills the college’s Diversity IPD requirement while offering an opportunity to engage in conversations that promote understanding, connection and lifelong learning. Prior registration is required to receive IPD credit.
